Sedation Dentistry Helps You Relax during Treatment

If you suffer from anxiety while sitting in the dentist's chair, have a sensitive gag reflex, or require an extensive treatment, we offer sedation dentistry at our Frisco practice. Dr. Chirag Patel can provide oral conscious sedation or nitrous oxide to help you achieve deep relaxation during your appointment. To learn more about how sedation dentistry can help you rest easy while you receive the treatment you need, schedule your consultation with Dr. Patel today.

Why Choose Sedation Dentistry?

If you suffer from extreme apprehension when it comes to dental treatment, you may have avoided professional attention for years. Without routine cleanings and exams, you can develop advanced decay requiring extensive restorative work. Regular dental exams include screenings for oral cancer and gum disease, and by neglecting to visit the dentist, very serious conditions can develop.

By providing sedation options, we can help you relax and feel comfortable about receiving the care you need. If you have a strong gag reflex, you may benefit from sedation dentistry. This reflex can be triggered by anxiety or extreme sensitivity. Sedation can effectively minimize this reflex and increase your comfort. In some cases, sedation dentistry can help Dr. Patel deliver the best possible care, since anxious patients are more difficult to treat.

We also use sedation dentistry during oral surgery, including dental implant surgery and bone grafting to help patients prepare for dental implants. Thanks to nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, long sessions in the dentist's chair can be spent in a state of deep relaxation and comfort.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is one of the most common types of dental sedation. Dr. Patel will administer an odorless, colorless mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a mask. As you breathe, the gas will take effect in just a few minutes, inducing a sense of relaxation. You will remain fully awake and able to answer questions. The gas wears off quickly, and you will be able to drive yourself home following your treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation involves taking prescribed pills to achieve a state of near-sleep while in the dentist's chair. You will be sedated, but still able to answer questions and respond to commands. Most patients who choose oral conscious sedation have absolutely no memory of their treatment afterward. It is very important to make sure you have a friend or loved one who can drive you to and from your appointment. You should also plan to rest and relax for the remainder of the day.

Which Sedation Option Is Right for Me?

Dr. Patel typically recommends nitrous oxide for kids and adults with mild to moderate dental anxiety. He usually reserves oral conscious sedation for adults with severe anxiety, or those undergoing extensive oral surgery. During a consultation, Dr. Patel will determine which sedation option is right for you.
